Heating Safety: Carbon Monoxide and Cracked Heat Exchangers
A cracked heat exchanger in a gas furnace can leak carbon monoxide — odorless, invisible, and dangerous. Warning signs include a yellow or flickering burner flame (it should be steady blue), soot around the furnace, a headache or nausea that fades when you leave the house, or a CO alarm going off.
If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone — including pets — out of the house immediately and call 911 from outside. Do not stay inside to “air it out,” and do not re-enter until responders say it’s safe. If you smell gas, leave the house right away and call 911 or your gas company from a safe distance — never try to find the leak yourself.
