Most residential Thermostats use 24 volts AC from a transformer located in the furnace or Air Handler to control a furnace and Air Conditioning outdoors. The transformer steps down 120 / 240 volts to the 24 volts for the thermostat and other controls send out the 24 volts signal on two wires. The two 24 volt wires go to the R terminal and We make the connection for Heat and Y Terminal to R for cooling. If it’s a Heat pump thermostat then the O or B terminal needs to be wired. The C terminal inside the thermostat is required to be wired, when there are no batteries or if one doesn’t want to use batteries.

Direction on how to install a Non Programmable Low Voltage Home Thermostat.

  • Before starting, you must read and thoroughly understand the Thermostat manufacturer instructions.
  • Remove the existing Thermostat front part first.
  • Turn the Circuit Breaker off or the On / Off Switch located near the indoor AC Unit.
  • Take a picture with your phone or write down which color wire goes to which terminal on the existing Thermostat.
  • Use stickers if supplied with a new Thermostat, on the wires before removing them from the base.
  • Remove the base by taking screws of the base plate mounted on the wall to secure the old Thermostat.
  • Remove the front part of the new thermostat from the base of your Thermostat.
  • First, install the back base on the wall with Screws and Anchors that came with the Thermostat.
  • Use a level to make sure it is not Leaning towards the right or left.
  • Install the Low-Voltage Color Coded Wires to the matching screw terminals on the new Thermostat base plate.
  • If your connections do not match exactly to the old Thermostat, refer to the new Thermostat’s owner’s manual.
  • Tighten all wires (normally the most common Thermostat use are terminals Rc, Rh, C, G, W, Y, O, W1, W2, E, Aux, X) on terminals with a specific color on specific the terminal.
  • If an old existing thermostat is missing C (normally for common in digital thermostats) terminal on the thermostat then use
  • Batteries in the specific direction mentioned in the installation manual that came with the thermostat.
  • Turn the power back On and check for Heating and Cooling Cycles.
  • We personally prefer to install the same or larger size thermostats to avoid wall paint.

Note: There are four basic types of Thermostats commonly used in homes Non-Programmable, Programmable, Wi-Fi, and Smart Thermostat.
Though Line Voltage Thermostat is also in use in old apartment buildings
