This is the first decision in every ductless AC installation, and it comes down to how many rooms you want to condition.
Single-zone means one outdoor unit paired with one indoor head. It’s the right call for a single problem room — the sun-baked bonus room over the garage, a finished basement, a home-office addition, or a room where the existing ductwork just never delivered. One thermostat, one space, done.
Multi-zone means one outdoor unit feeding two to five (sometimes more) indoor heads, each with its own thermostat. You get true zoning: the bedrooms cool at night while the living room idles, or the addition stays comfortable without stealing airflow from the rest of the house. Multi-zone is also a common way to replace aging window units across a whole floor without a full ducted system.
Not sure which you need? That’s what the free estimate visit is for. We look at the rooms, the layout, and how you actually live in the space — then give you a written price for the configuration that makes sense.
A clean ductless AC installation is mostly planning. Here’s what we work through with you before anything is mounted:
Head placement. Indoor heads go where they can move air across the room — high on an exterior wall is the classic spot, but floor-console units work well under windows and cassette units disappear into ceilings. We avoid mounting heads where they’ll blast directly onto a couch or a bed, and we keep them clear of heat sources like ranges and fireplaces.
Line set routing. The slim copper line set connects each head to the outdoor unit through a 3-inch conduit in the wall. We plan the shortest, neatest path — often straight out the back of the head — and seal every penetration so you don’t get drafts, insects, or water intrusion.
Outdoor unit location. The condenser needs solid footing (a pad or stand), airflow on all sides, and reasonable proximity to the heads. We keep it out of direct sight lines where possible, away from bedroom windows for noise, and positioned so a service technician can reach it easily for years.
Electrical. Mini-splits need a dedicated circuit. During the estimate we check your panel and tell you up front if an upgrade is needed — that goes into the written price before work starts, never as a surprise on installation day.
Commissioning. After startup, every zone is tested: pressures, temperatures, drainage and controls.
Most single-zone ductless AC installations are completed in a single day; multi-zone systems typically take one to two days. Here’s the sequence:
Evenings, weekends and holidays cost the same, so the install can be scheduled around your day.
AVS’s main office is at 2800 Dorr Ave in Fairfax (VA HVAC license 2705039269A), and we install ductless AC across Fairfax County: older homes in the City of Fairfax that never had ductwork, and additions in Chantilly and Centreville where a multi-zone system can be simpler than extending the old duct system. Maryland homeowners are served from our Bethesda office.
Every job gets a free written estimate, so you see the real number before anything starts. Here’s what goes into it:
There is no extra charge for nights, weekends or holidays. And with Wells Fargo financing — 0% APR up to 18 months on select units and zero-down plans (subject to lender approval) — you can spread the cost.
Mini-splits last a long time, but when the compressor fails on a 12- to 15-year-old system — or when repairs start stacking up past the point of sense — ductless AC replacement is usually the smarter money. The good news: replacement is simpler than a first-time installation. The electrical is already there, the pad is already there, and the line set path is already proven.
The old refrigerant is recovered as the law requires, the old heads and condenser are removed, and the new system goes in using the existing layout where it makes sense — or improved placement where it doesn’t. You also get a fresh manufacturer’s warranty, and today’s systems are typically quieter and more efficient than what they replace. If you’re unsure whether to repair or replace, see ductless AC repair or ask for both options in your free estimate.
A multi-zone mini-split is a real investment in your home’s comfort. AVS offers financing through Wells Fargo: 0% APR for up to 18 months on select units, plus zero-down plans, all subject to lender approval. Your written estimate stays the price no matter how you pay. Ask us during your estimate visit which plans and rebates apply to your system.

With offices in Fairfax, Falls Church and Bethesda, AVS technicians work across the region every day. Choose your city:
A single-zone installation is usually finished in one day. Multi-zone systems take one to two days depending on the number of heads and how complex the line set routing is. We’ll give you an exact timeline in your free written estimate.
There’s no one-size number — BTU capacity has to match each room’s square footage, insulation, sun exposure, and ceiling height. An oversized head short-cycles and wastes energy; an undersized one never catches up. Each head is sized room by room during your free estimate visit.
If your home already has good ductwork, compare heat pump installation and central AC installation. If it doesn’t, a mini-split avoids adding ducts. See all ductless AC services.
Yes. Ductless systems were made for homes without ducts: older homes, additions, finished basements, and sunrooms. No ductwork means no tearing open walls and ceilings, and installation is usually faster.
Yes. Most mini-splits are heat pumps that provide both cooling and heating. Many homeowners use them as the main heat in additions and single rooms, with the main system as backup on the coldest days.
New equipment comes with the manufacturer’s warranty. Ask during the estimate visit for the specific warranty terms on your equipment. Yearly mini-split cleaning and maintenance helps keep the system in good shape.
No. AVS charges no overtime fees — evenings, weekends, and holidays cost the same as a weekday visit. Schedule the installation when it’s convenient for you.
