Your furnace rests all summer. Your air conditioner rests all winter. Your heat pump never rests — it heats and cools your home 12 months a year, which means it needs professional heat pump maintenance twice a year, not once. As part of our heat pump services, AVS Heating and Air Conditioning tunes up heat pumps across Northern Virginia and Maryland with a full heating-mode and cooling-mode checklist, at a price written down before we start. Family-owned since 1991, 4.8★ from 354 Google reviews.

A full heat pump tune-up covers both seasons. Here’s what gets inspected, cleaned and tested:
Heating-mode checks (fall visit):
Cooling-mode checks (spring visit):
Every visit ends with a written report: what was checked, what’s healthy, and what to watch.
A furnace gets one workout per year: winter. An air conditioner gets one: summer. A heat pump gets two — it runs most days of the year, cycling between heating and cooling. That means more wear on the reversing valve, more coil exposure to dirt and debris, and more chances for refrigerant leaks to start.
One visit can’t cover both modes properly. A spring tune-up checks cooling components you’ll need in July; a fall tune-up checks defrost and backup heat you’ll need in January. Skip the fall visit and the first cold snap exposes every weak point — a dirty defrost sensor becomes a frozen coil, an untested aux strip becomes a no-heat night.
That’s why the VIP Maintenance Plan includes two inspections per year. Members get priority service and repair discounts on top of it.
You don’t always need a repair call — sometimes these signs just mean your tune-up is overdue. Watch for:
If something is actually broken — system won’t start, strange grinding, burning smell — head to heat pump repair for same-day service and the $90 visit. Regular maintenance prevents many of those calls.
The VIP Plan covers everything above: two inspections per year (heating and cooling), priority service and repair discounts, with a written maintenance report after each visit. For a furnace or central AC, see heating tune-up and AC maintenance and tune-up.
AVS also maintains heating and cooling equipment for shops, offices and other commercial buildings across Northern Virginia and Maryland. See commercial HVAC installation, repair and replacement.

“I called Saturday morning and they came that afternoon to fix my heating. They were very polite and they got the job done quickly! They also tuned my fan to not be as loud and did some preventative maintenance for free.”
“Arrived on short notice, identified the problem, fixed it, and did a complementary tune up on our heater. Highly recommend.”
“Great experience, always attentive over the phone and schedule maintenance or repairs as soon as convenient for you.”
With offices in Fairfax, Falls Church and Bethesda, AVS technicians work across the region every day. Choose your city:
Twice a year — once in the fall for heating mode (defrost system, aux heat, refrigerant) and once in the spring for cooling mode (coils, drain, airflow). Heat pumps run year-round, so one annual visit leaves half the system untested for six months.
The checklist covers both modes: defrost and auxiliary heat testing, reversing valve checks, coil cleaning (indoor and outdoor), refrigerant verification, condensate drain cleaning, electrical tightening, capacitor and contactor testing, and thermostat calibration. You get a written report of everything checked.
Our HVAC maintenance checkup is published at $79.95; call for current heat pump and VIP plan pricing. You get the price in writing before any work starts, and evening, weekend and holiday appointments cost the same. VIP Plan members also earn repair discounts across the year.
You can help: change filters regularly, keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and snow, and don’t stack anything within two feet of it. Leave refrigerant checks, electrical testing, defrost calibration, and coil cleaning to a licensed technician — VA HVAC 2705039269A, MD HVAC 520714137895.
Yes. A heat pump typically lasts about 10–15 years, and neglected ones often fail earlier (see the average life expectancy of a heat pump). Maintenance also catches small failures, like a weak capacitor or a clogged drain, before they take out a compressor.
No. AVS has no overtime charges — evenings, weekends, and holidays cost the same as weekday appointments, 24/7.
A family-owned team since 1991, a $90 site visit, the price before work starts, and no extra charge for evenings, weekends or holidays.
